Network Solutions: The FIRST Registrar!

Network Solutions was started over 30 years ago and had the sub-contract with the US Defense Information Systems Agency (DSIA) to give out the original top-level domains (TLDs) .com, .org, .mil, .gov, .edu and .net along with IP blocks for the public Internet. This DSI contract eventually went to the National Science Foundation and Network Solutions got the exclusive contract to be the registrar for the primary non-government TLDs (.com, .org and .net). They originally charged $100/year for each domain, and eventually were pressured out of exclusive registrar-ness by the creation of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Nujmbers (ICANN). ICANN eventually opened up the domain name industry, allwoing others to become registrars. Now we have the likes of Register.com, GoDaddy and 959 other accredited Registrars.

An aside to the aside: Way back in 1993, Steve bought BUTCHER.ORG for his own personal use - fluffing the paperwork a bit, which then required he be a non-profit to purchase and own a .ORG domain. The .com was taken by an actual butcher shop in Wisconsin at the time. It has since gone to a parked domain, and he is actively trying to acquire it.
