You want to sell online and take credit cards?

So, you want to sell something online? There are a lot of pieces to the eCommerce puzzle, but if you tackle them in the correct order, it is not always as daunting as it may seem. Authorize.net has a great ecommerce guide in PDF format that might help.

The steps are not as complex as you might think:

  1. The merchant (you!) or website (your store!) submits a credit card to the Payment Gateway
  2. The gateway (in this example, Authorize.net) securely passes the information to the merchant processor
  3. The merchant processor sends the information to the Credit Card Network (CCN)
  4. The CCN sends the transaction to the credit card issuing bank (customer's VISA, Amex, etc)
  5. Issuing bank approves or declines and puts authorization on customer's card
  6. CCN sends the results to the merchant processor
  7. The merchant processor sends the results back to the gateway
  8. The gateway sends the results to the customer and/or merchant.
  9. The Issuing bank sends funds to the CCN which then sends them to your bank

You ship the product to the customer and take the funds for that product.

Ask yourself some questions before selling online:

  • Is there an online market for your product?
  • Are you the first to do this online?
  • Do you have an payment gateway yet?
  • Have you worked out how you will pack and ship the product?
  • What about a development & support budget?
