What’s going on?
Late last year, Google announced that reCAPTCHA users would have to migrate to the Google Cloud Platform (GCP). This essentially means that reCAPTCHA will no longer be free, as each instance requires a billing account.
Note: Google will start charging after conducting 10,000 assessments.
- Is Google’s reCAPTCHA akin to Lumon’s Cold Harbor?
- Are we all micro data refiners working on a grand project?
- What are we not rewarded with finger traps when we complete a reCAPTCHA?
What are the steps I need to take?
The migration process is quite straightforward. If your website uses reCAPTCHA, we’ll contact you to set up a billing account on GCP. We’ll also provide you with an estimate of your approximate monthly cost. Afterward, we’ll migrate your website (including the keys) to the GCP. Importantly, there are no changes required to your actual website.
Note: If your website is hosted on the WordPress platform, we’ll need to update the plugin used for forms.
Are there any other options?
Yes, and now is the perfect time to explore them.
Cloudflare provides a solution called Turnstile. Currently, it’s free and verifies web visitors’ authenticity without the need for CAPTCHAs. We’ll be testing Turnstile in the near future to assess its potential as a viable alternative.
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
